Harleys roar through Houston: This fashionable motorcycle gang is on a mission to fight AIDS

Chris Salgardo has ridden his Harley up and down the west and east coasts to raise money to find a cure for AIDS. Now the president of Kiehl's Since 1851 is roaring across Texas.

Salgardo, accompanied by amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research) CEO Kevin Robert Frost, British artist Conrad Leach and rock 'n' roll celebrity photographer Travis Shinn, recently made a Houston stop at the Kiehl's Highland Village store as part of their five-day "Texas Ride for amfAR." The foursome traveled from Austin to Dallas for the Two X Two for AIDS and Art fundraiser, with stops in Sugar Land (at the Kiehl's counter at Dillard's in First Colony Mall), Houston and Longview.

"I've never come across so much rush-hour traffic where car drivers are so considerate to motorcyclists."

"I think that Texas gets a bad rap for not being supportive and emphatic to HIV/AIDS causes and I just don't think that's true," Salgardo said. "There's something about Texas, every time I come, the Southern hospitality is amazing.

"To be able to be on a bike, you see the country and you see the small towns like you can't in a car, so it's really a thrill for me."

Leach, who hails from London, said he found Texas drivers courteous to motorcycle riders, which might surprise some locals. "It's a really motorcycle-friendly place to ride. I've never come across so much rush-hour traffic where car drivers are so considerate to motorcyclists. Here I've never felt so welcomed on a motorcycle. First time in Texas, first time on a motorcycle in Texas. I'll definitely be coming back," he said.

The nice thing about a long motorcycle ride in Texas, Leach added, is the amount of miles you can cover in a day. "You can really stretch out and relax and start to enjoy the scenery," he said. "In Europe, by the time you've warmed up, you've arrived at your destination. Whereas here, the journey is everything — and it's wonderful."

The idea to launch charity motorcycle rides came naturally, said Salgardo, who has been riding motorcycles for more than 30 years. The skin care company, which has been in business since before Lincoln was president (1851), has long featured vintage motorcycles in its stores around the world.

In Houston, the band Dovetail greeted the riders and guests, who were treated to scull-themed nail art manicures and photos at the Smilebooth, along with skin care consultations. All proceeds from sales of Kiehl's Limited Edition Ultimate Strength Hand Salve benefit AIDS research, Salgardo noted. (A tube retails for $28.50.)

"Texas is a huge market for Kiehl's," Salgardo said, noting two stores in Dallas (at Highland Park and NorthPark) and one in Houston, with a new store planned to open in The Woodlands at the beginning of 2014. "We're not done with Houston yet. I will be back."

Sheriff suspends deputy who seized biker's camera

This is a follow up on two of our previous stories that can be found here and here.

DALLAS — The Dallas County Sheriff's Department has issued a 38-day suspension to a deputy who stopped a motorcycle rider without cause and seized his helmet camera.

The raw video of the Memorial Day weekend arrest by Deputy James Westbrook has been seen by almost half a million people around the world on YouTube.

The suspension — which Westbrook can appeal — amounts to almost two months off without pay.

“I think we should applaud the agency," said Dr. Robert Taylor, a criminal justice expert at the University of Texas at Dallas. "There were days in American law enforcement when nothing would've happened. And those weren't too far off."

However, Taylor said other departments would have surely fired Westbrook.

Westbrook made the arrest on Memorial Day weekend, when local law enforcement departments were on high alert. They wanted to prohibit reckless behavior by motorcycle riders on the anniversary of a biker event where they shut down North Central Expressway in Dallas and sprayed graffiti on the road.

During his arrest of biker Chris Moore, Westbrook said: "The reason you're being pulled over is because I'm gonna take your camera and we're gonna use it as evidence of in the crimes that have been committed by other bikers."

It is not illegal to wear a camera on your helmet. And experts say Westbrook’s reason did not constitute probable cause to make a traffic stop.

But what bothers Taylor more than Westbrook's traffic stop is the deputy's verbal outbursts and how he slammed the squad car door on the biker's leg.

"Those are the kinds of things that smack of all the ugly things we see in law enforcement,” Taylor said.

Hunter Biederman, Moore's lawyer, said Westbrook should have been fired. "I think they're sending the message that what he did was okay,” Biederman said.

He is prepared to take this to trial, a rare step for a small offense. But Biederman said it was necessary after his client was arrested, mistreated, and then held in the Dallas County Jail.

"I don't think this person should be out patrolling our streets. I don't that type of person should be stopping and arresting our citizens,” he said.

Prior to responding to the biker situation, Westbrook had arrested a drunk driver. Eight of Westbrook's 38 suspension days were related to him leaving his prisoner at the jail without booking him in while he went out on the biker call.

Deputy Westbrook declined to comment on the case to News 8. He has not served the suspension yet and can still appeal.

4B Wild West Bike Rally

The 4B Wild West will be holding it's 4th annual bike rally August 10th through the 11th, at 1761 Country Club Rd in Brownfield, TX (79316).

With over 400 acres of FREE camping, it is one of the biggest bike rallies in Texas! Gates open at 12 pm and admission cost $20 for the whole weekend.

There will be 8 live bands such as an AC/DC tribute band Back in Black, and the infamous Whips and Kisses. There will be an afternoon "Cancer Rides 2 Remember," 4 Brigade FMX stunt show,  burlesque shows, biker games, and so much more.

Since 2009, the 4B Wild West's profits for the event have benefited local cancer patients who are in need financially, and continues to help out those in need. You must be 18 or older to enter.

Road Trip!

Tired of Dallas and need to get out of the city for a while? Why not take a road trip to San Antonio? July is the great time to head down there, since there is so much to look at, especially out on the road. Biker Lawyer has a few suggestions on what to check out.

While traveling south on I-35 to San Antonio, you'll pass Waxahachie, which has one of the most interesting buildings: the Ellis County Courthouse. Built in 1894, the "Unrequited Love Carvings" made this 9 stories tall court house famous. Legend has it that Harry Herley, a stone mason who fell in love with Mabel Frame, daughter of the boarding house where he stayed. At first, Herley carved her face in the sand stone that is now part of the court house, but she ignored his feelings for her, knowing that she would never pay attention to him, those beautiful carvings of her face slowly became twisted demons. This is something interesting that catches the attention from anyone.

After walking around the courthouse for a while, you'll probably work up an appetite. An hour or so further down from Waxahachie, you'll want to make a stop in Waco for some barbecue. Michna's BBQ is located on 2803 Franklin Avenue, two quick turns from the freeway. They are known for their amazing ribs and their southern hospitality; a John Wayne lover would love it.

While you're in Waco, you can't afford to miss a trip to the Dr. Pepper Museum. Located on 300 South 5th Street, here you'll learn anything and everything you could know about the Dr. Pepper brand. A fair warning: this place used to be the easiest place to get the best Dr. Pepper had to offer, the infamous pure can sugar Dublin Dr. Pepper, but after losing a lawsuit last year it is no longer in production. They may still have some in stock, but if you miss out, you'll have to try their infamous XXX Root Beer instead.

After getting your motorcycle back on the road, you'll want to travel a little further down I-35 to Austin. While in Austin, if you ever need something extra for your bike, you can stop at Cycle Gear. They have just about anything one needs for their bike. Should you decide to stop for a while longer, check out the Bat Bridge, where a literal a swarm of bats can seem turn the day into night. It's great for sightseers and nature lovers.

When you finally reach San Antonio, there is no time to rest. You must go out and see it all! The Toilet Museum, Gravity Hill, The World's Largest Boots, The River Walk, and last but not least, The Alamo. San Antonio is a beautiful city, with beautiful people, and great places to eat. Don't forget to have fun and enjoy your escape from DFW while it lasts.

Allstate Installs Permanent Warning Signs to Promote Motorcycle Safety at Dangerous Intersections in Dallas

These signs will be permanently installed today in Grand Prairie, Texas at the corner of E. Main St. and 14th St.

DALLAS – In an effort to help standardize warning signs for motorcycle safety and help reduce the number of motorcycle crashes at intersections involving other vehicles, Allstate Insurance Company announced earlier this month plans to permanently install motorcycle warning signs in more than 30 U.S. cities this year. Currently, there is no standard sign for motorcycle awareness.

The yellow, diamond shaped warning sign was created following two years of development, which included 140 temporary installations in various U.S. cities between 2010 and 2011.  The signs were designed to establish a standardized warning device that can be used by any local or state agency and would be recognizable to riders and motorists across the country.  Simply reading, “Watch for Motorcycles,” the sign was developed by Allstate as part of its “Once is Never Enough” (ONE) program – an awareness campaign that encourages people to look twice for motorcycles at intersections – and are being donated and installed  in Dallas to help prevent motorcycle crashes in the future.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), there were 569 crashes involving a motorcyclist in Dallas County in 2010, and of those crashes, 35 percent occurred at intersections.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 46 percent of all multi-vehicle crashes occur at intersections, oftentimes as a result of a vehicle turning left, impeding the motorcyclist’s right-of-way.

“It’s for all of us who share the road to remember to always look twice at intersections, especially on our crowded roads,” said Dusty Wallace, Allstate Agent.  “The addition of these motorcycle warning signs will be a great reminder to help keep everyone safe.”

Through its ONE program, Allstate works with local traffic authorities – like TxDOT – to identify dangerous intersections for riders and then donates and installs warning signs at the determined locations to increase awareness of motorcycles.

The signs will be permanently installed today in Grand Prairie, Texas at the corner of E. Main St. and 14th St.  Additional signs will be installed in Dallas during the coming weeks.

In honor of National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Allstate is also encouraging people throughout the month of May to take the ONE Pledge – committing to look twice for motorcycles at intersections – and share with at least ONE other person to spread the message. RIDING IN TRAFFIC? TIPS TO STAY ALIVE!

It's a jungle out there! Ask any biker. Crowded streets and highways, drivers with cell phones, newspapers or screaming kids, you name it, it's out there. Here are some ideas on what to do:

• Trust your mirrors: Always include additional glance over shoulder.
• Never get between a vehicle and an offramp: last second exits can be fatal.
• Cover your brakes: Helps to minimize reach time.
• Be noticed: Ride with hi beam on and wear brightly colored gear.
• Power: Ride in a low gear for added acceleration.
• Traffic slowing? Staying left or right of the car in front give you an escape route.
• Scan traffic: Keeps you aware and in touch with your situation. No surprises!
• Left-turn treachery: Always approach oncoming traffic turning left with caution. Watch the car's wheels and driver's hands on wheel. Be ready if you see movement, especially 18-wheelers.
• Use an Escort: Let larger vehicles act as an escort through intersections. Also, wait on other traffic to escort you if your light turns green.
• Ride in open zones: Use your bike's power and maneuverability to ride in open zones in traffic. Riding with traffic can make you hard to see.

Last but not least, Pay attention and drive defensively! Your life could depend on it.
